Over the River and Through the Woods - Progress! Other stitchery updates and the Destiny of Dear Nina from Grandma's Red Needle

Hello dear readers and followers! I hope you all are doing well.
It has been way too long! I call it 'vacation' (from sewing)!

As you may remember from my previous post, 'dear Nina' had to go to the spa.
The handwheel (mechanical part) got fixed. Unfortunately, the S-board (motherboard) is pooped and has to be replaced. To make a long story short; the S-board is not available from Bernina Switzerland!! The S-board is not made anymore since the 440 model is +20 years. The S-board is available at Bernina SA, hence a dear friend has offered to take the ...

Too Many Men Wall Hanging - A Finished UFO from Grandma's Red Needle

I have a few FINISHED UFO's to show. I'll start with this one.
This post has been in draft mode since April, just waiting for photos.
Photos were finally done today, but due to strong glare from the sun and blue sky, they didn't turn out as good as I hoped. Oh well... I'm not a photographer!

Since I finished my goal for April early (Dwellings), I thought it would be nice to finish a smaller quilt; the snowmen wall hanging.
I'm not sure when I started working on this one.
I purchased the panel ...

Who sent the Squirrel?! from Grandma's Red Needle

Since last Saturday I've been doing a little bit tidying on the sewing table.
Before I packed away the red fabrics (RSC April), I made these two small hot pads. Aren't they cute?

The rectangle one measures a bit shy of 6.75 x 8.75 inches

The round one is 8.25 inches across

But that was not what I was going to talk about!
I had finished some items for my Etsy Shop, the hot pads, and the 'plan' was to sandwich another UFO (my goal for May)
After a delicious morning cuppa, I was going ...

Keep the Home Fires Burning - A Finish from Grandma's Red Needle

I reached my goal for March!
(I'm late in posting my finishes)

'Keep the Home Fires Burning' is FINISHED

This quilt was started when I had a squirrel moment in February 2024, and also a result of the RSC - Rainbow Scrap Challenge 2024

In December 2024 I made a pieced backing, using up more bits & pieces of fabrics I know I'd never use for anything else. I got two leftover blocks I added to the back.

Deciding on a quilting design is always a challenge. I do all quilting on my domestic sewing machine; Bernina 440 QE. The ...

A Flimsy and Pieced Backing from Grandma's Red Needle

'Dwellings' is a flimsy!

'Dwellings' was born Dec 2022, after drooling over the pattern in Sept/Oct 22 issue of Love of Quilting
I can't believe I haven't posted updates on this quilt! There's only the post linked to above.

I've been hoarding Moda Marbles as long as I've been quilting. I had a good selection and realized it is unlikely I'd use those MM any time soon. Using them in small projects don't make a dent! Then I decided 'Dwellings' is the perfect quilt to use some of the MM.
I have ...

RSC Week 10 - Not Much to Show from Grandma's Red Needle

As the title says; I don't have much to show today.
I haven't made more yellow blocks (RSC for March), as I intended to.

I got busy quilting 'Keep the Home Fires Burning' and I'm happy to say about 3/4 of the quilt is done! I'm quilting it in straight seams only, rather tedious, but I like how it looks.
And there are some yellows too! I have quilted a few yellow blocks, which should count?! lol

Can you spot Mini-Bug? He fell asleep after helping me choosing the right area to quilt and to ...

New York Beauty Quilt is Finished! from Grandma's Red Needle

When the weather calls for 'no venture out', what do you do?!
SEW! EAT! Drink COFFEE! SLEEP! REPEAT!
Well, this apply to all rainy days, not only last week when 'Garance' passed close by.

My February goal was to finish the NYB quilt, and I did!

It has 48 blocks + 4 corner blocks.
It measures 74 x 58 inches / 188 x 147 cm
All batik from my stash, except the backing (batik too) I had to purchase.

Once again thank you to those of you who suggested thread color and design!  (here). Much appreciated!

You may remember I'm on ...

Country Charm is a Flimsy from Grandma's Red Needle

I'm thrilled to have 'Country Charm' as a Flimsy!
What is a flimsy, you may ask? A completed quilt top that is not quilted, nor does it have batting or batting, just the top.

I finished the top in January, but never got around taking photos, until some days ago.
I did not intend finishing the top this quick, but I got totally obsessed by all those 2" squares collected from swaps. The 2.5" (HST) are from my own cut squares.

Look at all those yummy squares!

Who does not go dizzy or cross-eyed working with all those ...

How to Quilt and Thread Color, Suggestions Please from Grandma's Red Needle

This New York Beauty was done and thread basted January 2023.
The blocks were finished March 2021, when did I start it? Let me dig some more...
Can't find anything.... most probably end 2020 or beginning 2021.

UFO #1 - UFO list 2025

Why did I put it aside, you may wonder? Because;
1) How to quilt it?
2) What tread color to use?

As you can see, it has a variety of colors; pink, yellow, teal, turquoise, grey and more.
(The photos don't do justice to the colors. It's cloudy and raining cats and dogs here right ...

Purple Finishes from Grandma's Red Needle

After joining RSC in 2023 - purple was chosen for April that year - and after making the monthly blocks I had chosen, I decided to make a purple & white/cream quilt.

I got a copy of Quiltmaker May/June 2022 and fell in love with 'Bases Loaded' by Becky Rico (Scroll down to the Green/Cream HST quilt). Why not make one in purple, I thought, and so it happened!

I had to focus getting it right! lol

Using up as many purple fabrics as possible, I made a pieced backing for this one; 12 blocks + pieces of fabric. It wasn ...

HAPPY HOLIDAYS, MERRY CHRISTMAS & HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!

Here we go again! UFOs / WIPs 2025!
I know I'm one week early, but I also know there's no chance I'll get any of these UFOs / WIPs finished before 2025!
I've been a slug the last couple of years, finished only a few.
The list does not differ much from January 2024, just added a few more! Haha!

1) New York Beauty
Progress 2024: blocks pieced together, thread basted, ready for quilting
2) PSQ 36-patches
Progress: more blocks added
3) Wedding Ring quilt
Progress: Zero!
4) Scrappy Christmas ...

UFO under the Needle from Grandma's Red Needle

As you already may have noticed (if you read my previous post), my UFOs/WIPs list is long as a freight train! How did that happen, btw??

The RSC color for April 2023 was purple. I pulled out all purple yardage, about 12-13 yards. After making the monthly blocks, I decided to make a purple & white/cream quilt. By March 2024, all the blocks for the quilt were done + I made a smaller quilt using up more purple yardage. You can see part of the quilts here. I did quilt and finished the biggest purple quilt (yet to take photos ...
